Why has the price of AI been reduced, but the bill has not been reduced?

2026-09-07·Tunenomics Expert·Read about 5 minutes
The decrease in unit price does not mean the decrease in total cost. This article breaks down the three most vulnerable parts of the price cut and gives you ways to check them yourself.

One sentence conclusion: A decrease in unit price does not mean a decrease in bill. The unit price is the unit price, and the bill is "volume × unit price" - the usage often rises faster than the price drops, and the most expensive part of the bill is often not the unit price, but the "repeated payment" part.

Phenomenon

Every once in a while, model prices will be adjusted, new models will be released, and the numbers on the price tags will become smaller and smaller. But if you really look through your bills, many people will find:The account was not reduced accordingly, sometimes it is rising.

This is not an illusion, nor is it a problem of which company. The fact that it is a "price reduction" is viewed in an incomplete position.

Teardown: Three places where price cuts are eaten up

The first point: Volume is rising faster than price.Price reduction is usually accompanied by stronger capabilities, and stronger capabilities will bring more usage: sessions become longer, calls are more frequent, and tasks that were previously not dared to be done can now be done. The unit price is discounted, but the amount multiplied by several times still increases.

The second part · The part of repeated payment.In a bill, the really expensive part is often not "an expensive call", but "the same paragraph has been read multiple times." Its unit price is not high and it is inconspicuous each time, but it is paid every time - so it is the area with the largest cost reduction space. The nature of this piece has nothing to do with price increases or price reductions:As long as the structure remains unchanged and the unit price drops, it will still be there.

The third point: The billing methods are not unified and the unit prices are not comparable.Some services are calculated based on AI billing units, some are calculated based on times, some are calculated based on subscriptions, and some are billed using points. If you mix these into one table and do a "unit price comparison", what you will see in the comparison is actually the difference between different business models, not the difference in price.

Conclusion

If you want to know why the price reduction was not credited to your account, the order should be:

  1. First click on the billBilling methodGrouping - only comparisons within the same billing method are meaningful;
  2. Look at each group againAmountHow much has changed (usually this is the main reason);
  3. Look at it lastUnit price。

Skipping the first two steps and directly comparing unit prices is equivalent to answering a question that has nothing to do with your bill.

Boundary (under what circumstances does this article not hold)

  • If your usage basically remains unchanged during the observation period, then the unit price will be reducedWillDirectly reflected on the bill - at this point the first point in this article does not apply.
  • If your business does not have multiple rounds of dialogue and does not repeatedly transmit the same piece of content, then the second point does not apply.
  • This article does not target any manufacturer, nor does it give any specific details.How much you can save depends on your usage structure,

For any statement that "can save X%", you can ask it to give the algorithm.

How can you verify it yourself?

Take your own bills for two consecutive months and do only one thing:Group by billing method to see how much "volume" and "unit price" have changed. This operation does not require any tools or access to any system - just use the file you exported in the background.

If the change in "quantity" in the two columns is much greater than the change in "unit price", then you have found the answer.
